140 William St HV/LV Electrical Asset Upgrade

In one of Melbourne’s largest live office infrastructure upgrades, Stowe Australia was engaged to deliver a comprehensive electrical systems replacement at 140 William Street. This project involved the upgrade of all HV equipment and infrastructure, the replacement of all LV main switchboards and the installation and upgrade of HV alternators, PLC/ BMS systems and associated building works.

The 140 William Street HV/LV Electrical Asset Upgrade was one of the largest in Melbourne completed within a live office environment. Stowe Australia was engaged to assist with the design and consolidation of all HV/LV electrical infrastructure throughout the complex, this includes the layout of the new electrical switch rooms. The existing 6.6kV HV reticulation system was replaced with a streamlined 11kV system to simplify operations and reduce associated equipment.
Stowe’s work involved the upgrade of the HV equipment and infrastructure and the replacement of 5 LV main switchboards. Stowe were also engaged to manage the installation of the HV alternators and PLC/BMS system and associated building works. The project required multiple building shutdowns that affected tenants and therefore Stowe was required to work with the client and building management to manage tenant requirements during the shutdowns.

Operating within a fully tenanted high-rise office environment presented several logistical challenges for the team. One of the key tasks was to install a new HV cable path from B2 to Level 42 to accommodate 4 x 11kV rising mains, this required a 2 hour fire encasement and building permits band approvals from Fire Victoria and 2 independent fire engineers to ensure compliance. As one of the electrical switch rooms were located on level 42, the main switchboard had to be designed to be transported through a small concrete opening in the floor.

Throughout the works, Stowe conducted regular meetings with all 64 building tenants to refine shutdown strategies to meet individual operational needs. As a result, the project was delivered with minimal disruption, demonstrating Stowe’s capability in managing high risk works within complex, live environments.
