ABC Ultimo UPS Upgrade

The UPS upgrade at the ABC headquarters in Sydney involved the design and installation of seven Vertiv Liebert APM Plus Modular UPS systems. Stowe Australia were engaged to replace seven existing UPS units with new UPS units without disrupting the operations of the building. The UPS systems were connected to existing battery banks that had recently been replaced.

The project consisted of the upgrade of seven UPS units across three UPS rooms, located in the lower levels of the ABC Ultimo headquarters. The purpose of the project was to replace end-of-life units whilst future proofing the critical electrical infrastructure by designing a UPS system which allowed zero disruptions to the client’s live critical environment and ensure capacity for future expansion.
Further to the UPS scope was the upgrade to the three UPS room’s lighting to LED and an emergency lighting upgrade to the UPS rooms to the building’s Legrand Galaxy emergency lighting monitoring system.

We were required to design a UPS system capable of handling the existing two wire battery arrangement. This involved collaboration with the UPS supplier from design, shop drawing approvals, manufacturing, delivery, handling, testing and commissioning. It also involved designing a customised solution for the client with regards to site acceptance testing on full load for all new units before placing them into service.
The also project involved working in a live critical operating environment with critical national emergency broadcasting, national news and radio broadcasting 24/7 which could not be interrupted under any circumstances. The project involved high level communications with all key stakeholders over the course of the project, with redundancy plans in place to mitigate risk.
