Stowe Australia carried out the installation of the 2 x 5000A SPD’s, new generator MSB and the replacement of all generator control systems over several levels in the Aurora Place building, making it a very complex project.

Previously, Aurora Place had two main switchboards that were fed directly off individual substations, with no isolation points. The previous gen control components were no longer supported by their manufacturers. This meant that in the event of a failure, the building would not have any back up power generation. A like-for-like swap was not possible, therefore an extensive reconfiguration of the existing setup was required.

The installation included a new generator MSB and replacement of all generator control systems. The two service protection devices were installed in the main switchroom, giving back control of supply to the client when maintenance isolations are required, alleviating the need for supply authority involvement.

Mechanical lifting of busduct and components that weighed up to 100kgs per meter was required up to 4m high.

Each SPD weighed just under 2 tons. Stowe were required to transport these from the loading dock, up to Level 3 through the goods lift, into the main switch room.

The Level 4 generator room had no lift/goods lift access and was fire stairs only. We required 14m of 3200A busduct, 6 x Generator Control Panels, 1 x Auxiliary Switchboard and 1 x 5000A Generator MSB to be installed in Level 4. The building façade had to be re-engineered to allow for all components to be craned into Level 4, plus temporary road closures were required.
