The Burnley Tunnel is an active tunnel that has over 18M vehicles that travel through it annually.
The Burnley Tunnel Enhancement project involved the installation of a Pace-Maker lighting system to address the steepness of the tunnel and to encourage users to maintain the set speed limit.
More than 6000 new Pace-Maker lights were installed and more than 3000 new LED fittings were installed to replace existing fittings. This was an innovative project to assist with road congestion within the tunnel during peak hours.
The project had an aggressive program and to ensure the timely delivery of the Pace-Maker lighting, Stowe were required to look at various off-site manufacturing solutions, including potentially building all light fittings in an off-site facility, ready for the night shift team to install.
The Burnley Tunnel remained active throughout the project with one of the three lanes open to traffic. To mitigate the risk, Stowe worked closely our client and the traffic management team to ensure that staff were always protected in the work zones.
