HMAS Penguin Naval Base
The HMAS Penguin generator replacement project included replacement of one 250kVA local emergency diesel generator. The local emergency generator at HMAS Penguin serves as a backup power supply for essential services at the site’s health centre.
The HMAS Penguin Generator Replacement project aimed to enhance the reliability of its emergency generator and backup power supply for essential services in the Health Centre. The project involved installing new low voltage cabling, cable trays, and switchboards to support the electrical infrastructure.
Additionally, it entailed setting up a new diesel control panel, new diesel transfer pumps, and diesel pipes to enhance the diesel transfer system from the new bulk tank. To support the generator’s operation, a new supply air fan was integrated for air intake, a custom-made sheet metal transfer duct was fabricated to manage the hot air discharge from the radiator, and a new exhaust system and muffler were installed. Testing and commissioning was completed on all new equipment before being energised.
Stowe Australia replaced the existing generator, diesel transfer system and main switchboards due to their end-of-life status and the need for upgrades.
A HAZMAT assessment revealed the presence of lead dust and asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in certain parts of the generator.
Following a hygienist’s guidance, Stowe entered the room to isolate and secure electrical equipment, allowing the safe removal or cleaning of hazardous waste. The hygienist carefully wrapped the ACM components of the generator and issued a clearance certificate, permitting the safe removal of the generator.
The project encountered spatial constraints due to the larger physical size of the new generator, bulk tank, and switchboards. To resolve this, Stowe redesigned the floor plan and equipment layout to accommodate everything effectively.
