Stowe Australia were engaged to design and construct the upgrade of the Lowood Treated Water Pump Station (TWPS).
The Lowood TWPS is located adjacent to the Lowood Water Treatment Plant (WTP), Seqwater’s largest off-grid plant. Construction of both plants was completed in 1989, with Seqwater taking ownership of the plant in 2008. The demand on the plant is such that it cannot be met by other means, such as tanker supply.
This project encompassed the design, supply, installation, and testing of a fully redundant MCC with dual mains and generator incoming supplies, ensuring the plant’s high availability and maintenance requirements were met. The MCC design allows for the isolation of one half of the switchboard for maintenance or equipment installation, while the other half continues to operate the plant. This is achieved through the provision of dual supplies, and the necessary equipment for each load, and automatic transfer to maintain the power supplies.
The Main Switchboard upgrade at the Seqwater facility was successfully completed without any interruption to business operations or the continuous supply of water to customers. To achieve this, multiple planned maintenance outages were meticulously scheduled and executed in close collaboration with the plant’s operations department. This coordination ensured that critical systems remained functional throughout the upgrade process, mitigating any risk to service continuity.
A distinctive dual Bus-Tie design enhances safety during the isolation of MCC sections. This feature proved invaluable, enabling installation work to proceed while the other half of the MCC remained live and operating the plant. As a result, shutdowns were minimized, leading to fewer disruptions in drinking water production, which was a key success of the project.
