Randwick Army Barracks is a military base situated 7.5 km south of Sydney’s CBD. The base primarily services the Australian Army 2nd Division and Reserve Units.
Randwick Army Barracks has a high level of living in accommodation (LIA) which is used to accommodate permanent members posted to the Base, those ADF members on predeployment training courses and overflow for navy personnel undergoing training at other Sydney bases.
The project was to upgrade and modernise the high voltage / low voltage electrical infrastructure at Randwick Barracks – specifically the high voltage components of network – to improve reliability, capacity and safety. Consultation with supply authorities and network control was required during the design and delivery phases of the project.
The new high voltage cabling and infrastructure was designed to be constructed, installed, commissioned and energised independently, operating in parallel of the existing network.
Once the new HV electrical infrastructure was commissioned and the existing loads had been transferred onto it, the old electrical infrastructure comprising of 11kV switchgear in Main Switch Room (MSR) and eleven (11) existing kiosk substations were safely isolated, decommissioned and removed.
As Randwick Barracks is an operational defence establishment, Stowe had to ensure that there would be minimal interruptions to day-to-day operations.
A detailed methodology for the installation of the new infrastructure while keeping the existing infrastructure in service allowed minimal interruptions to Defence, as the cutover of the old to new infrastructure was carried out over a weekend while the base had a reduced number of members onsite.
