Stowe Australia proudly delivered the design and construction of a new state-of-the-art sports lighting system at Stadium Australia (now Accor Stadium) to provide high-performance pitch illumination for major events and broadcasts. Winner – 2023 NSW NECA Award for Lighting Design and Construct. Commendation – 2023 National NECA Award for Lighting Design and Construct.

The Stadium sports lighting upgrade was a highly complex and technically demanding undertaking. From the outset, the design phase posed significant challenges, as the system needed to meet FIFA A standards while integrating seamlessly with the existing roof structure.

The initial main works were delivered within a compressed timeframe, driven by the need to have the new system operational for a marquee event featuring Barcelona FC and the A-League All Stars.

Stowe’s extensive scope included:

  • Digitally engineered lighting design developed to meet FIFA A standards for stadium sports lighting
  • Installation of 438 LED sports lighting fixtures mounted onto the stadium’s roof structure
  • Design and installation of structurally engineered support brackets to accommodate new lighting equipment
  • Lifting and placement of light fittings onto gantries and headframes from the seating bowl area
  • Assembly of lighting fittings onto brackets at pre-established satellite preparation stations
  • Installation of a ring main communications network, including seven control and equipment hubs
  • Upgrades to existing electrical and structural infrastructure within the gantry zones suspended beneath the roofline
  • Commissioning of active network equipment to enable full operational control of the lighting system
  • Final commissioning and validation of on-field illuminance to meet the specific lux levels and uniformity required for various sporting codes and broadcasting standards.

Every aspect of the upgrade – from structural load considerations to beam angle optimisation – required meticulous coordination between structural and electrical engineers, lighting designers, and stakeholders.

The venue’s scale and architectural constraints demanded custom bracketry and precise modelling to ensure the lighting performance met the required levels for both sporting and broadcast applications.
Additional projects and service works remain ongoing at the venue.
