The Transurban network has been servicing the needs of Melbourne for over 25 years and accommodates more than 18 million vehicles across its network annually. One of the critical pieces of infrastructure that supports this network of roads is the CCTV system

This CCTV upgrade project involved the removal, replacement and installation of additional cameras to a total of 220 new cameras, 12,000 metres of new optic fibre cable new critical infrastructure to support the upgrade.

The existing analogue surveillance cameras on Citylink’s Network, including the Domain and Burnley Tunnels were at the end of their predicted life.

The CCTV upgrade project included the replacement and installation of 118 new cameras in the tunnels, 103 cameras along the roadside, accident incident detection cameras, pan tilt zoom cameras and new wiring to support the cameras.

The project was completed over a two-year period using scheduled road closures as well as project-specific lane closures.

Due to the high risks associated with mounting equipment above an operational roadway the installation and fixing methods went through a comprehensive design and manufacturing process to ensure the highest level of safety.

Due to the new cameras working on a different platform to the existing system, Stowe designed a new camera network system inhouse which included a fibre optic communications network and DC power system to support the new camera requirements allowing the new system to integrate with the existing network.
